Osafo Anthony of flex News released a news item which could best be considered as a street gossip.
In his opinion, Guru and Lilwin did not match the VGMA board's definition of a collaboration of the year, hence suggested to the organisers to take them out of the category.
This was his statement......
"Still perusing the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards nomination list for 2014, I’ve come across something questionable; specifically, the Best Collaboration of the Year category.
Nominees for Best Collaboration of the Year category are:
Odo Pa - Castro feat. Baby Jet & KofiKinaata
Down On One- Sarkodie feat. Fuse ODG
Slow Down - R2Bees feat. Wizkid
Adult Music-Kwabena Kwabena
Azonto Boys-Guru Feat. Lil Win
Hot Cake-Pope Skinny Feat. Shatta Wale
Nyame Egwamaa-Joyce Blessing Feat. Jewel Ackah
According to the VGMA criteria definition for Best Collaboration of the Year: “is the song adjudged by the Academy, Board and the General Public as the song released through the collaboration/featuring of two or more artistes.
The song must have been released and generated the most excitement during the year under review.”All the nominees in the category are artistes – one artiste collaborating with other artiste(s). The word artiste is the core element in the definition.
Guru is an artiste but Lil Win is not! Again, according to VGMA: an artiste is a musician who performs songs on stage to an audience.Lil Win does not perform songs on stage for audience so he is not an artiste. Asamoah Djan aka Baby Jet, though a footballer, can be called an artiste because he has performed on several major musical platforms but Lil Win has not!Lil Win, for now, is still an actor andnot an artiste/musician.
So technically, what Guru and Lil Win did together, does not qualify them for music collaboration nomination. What Lil Win did on Guru’s song is nothing to be considered serious as singing or rapping.
What Lil Win did can best be considered as ‘ad-libs’ and not singing/rapping in the real sense of music. With this revelation, Flex newspaper brings to the notice of the board for consideration and possible annulment of Guru from the Best Collaboration of the Year category. Nevertheless, the pick is in your hands. We advocate for this not out of any malice. Until then…..MOTWUM!!",he stated.
